Growing Food at >9000 ft Elevation -- Apples!

...apple sauce, apple cider, apple juice, canned apples...yum!

When it comes to growing calories, fruit is among the best selection of what to grow. However, living so high up approximately 9000 feet elevation growing any fruits is a tough one. So what is one to do?

Grow apples!

Apples are full of natural sugars, antioxidants, minerals, and fiber. Thus it can be concluded that having apple trees on one's property is a great investment that last several generations. The cool thing is that you can do a lot with apples besides picking one off the tree and eating it.

For instance, one relative loved to skin and bake apples for Thanksgiving dinner. Or I remember field trips to pumpkin patches to pick a pumpkin in the fall and drink apple cider. What great memories I have about apples...and they grow so well at our altitude.

One reason why apples do so well here is because high altitude usually creates a drier or semi-arid climate that actually prevent disease. There are many diseases that plague apple orchards and destroys them, but not here. Apple trees around these parts may get a disease but a good pruning in the winter months does the trick to stop it.

There are many varieties that grow well in high altitude and thrive. There are two nurseries that you can find these varieties at. One is Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project (MORP) and Tooley's Trees. Both organizations will answer all of your questions and help you select the best for your location or climate.
