I cannot believe that this one is native to my area...
When we first found this land, we found wild bushes all over. Actually, they are everywhere in our community. So we were naturally skeptical of them and refused to eat the beautiful berries that grew on them. It wasn't until we observed the land for a few months and started identifying the natural vegetation that we found that what we had all over our property was indeed red currant.
Not really able to do much for them or research how to prune them, eventually a few were actually buried or ran over from our excavator who had little regard for them. My similar reaction to the goji berry was to these red currant bushes. I honestly thought that was the last of these ones and that we would have to learn how to propagate the surviving bushes. Then to our surprise, these hardy bushes started to grow leaves even after being pummeled by a back hoe several times. Or the buried ones start to sprout from the soil. That is when we finally realized, really, that plants that feed us grow extremely well at our altitude and cold climate.
So here is more interesting facts on the red currant:
This bush grows better in a cold climate than warm. And produces much more berries than in a warmer climate. Most interestingly, the red currant can thrive in a climate that can get to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Their best companion plant is the marigold, and they do best if you add manure at their base in the spring. Lastly, they are subject to powdery mildew but there are disease resistant varieties. However, we have never seen any disease on ours but they are wild and the most hardy plant I have seen besides an evergreen tree here.
