Growing Food at >9000ft Elevation -- GOJI BERRIES!

Incredibly easy to grow...

When I first started my gardening journey...and let's be honest, that is all that it was. Its hard to implement a permaculture system inside of an apartment...it seemed like we killed everything. So to take on a project of growing in such a harsh climate was a bit overwhelming.

However, after doing some research we found the goji berry bush grows in a similar climate and does amazing...but it is in China. We said "why not" and went on a merry way to do grow it. Also, a friend in our state grows his at 9400' elevation so we knew we may finally have success on having something green survive under our watch.

The cool thing it worked. Our friend actually had goji roots shooting everywhere like a weed actually and thought since we wanted to grow it that we could dig some up that shot up in the middle of his greenhouse walkway.

When we brought our half dead bare roots that we were sure that our success would be a long shot, we were pleasantly surprised that tiny leaves started to shoot up with in days in the container we temporarily had them in. Then they started to need more room to grow so we went onto another obstacle...would they last after transplanting after finally recovering neglect?

Well...at first no. It died again. Then a few days later as the last shoot crumbed we noticed something strange. The bare root had a dried up stem so nothing was growing on that before. The plant just simple had a green shoot pop up next to the "dead" stem. So when these green shoot of leaves died, I was sure it was the end. Nope. These goji berries are fighters. They started forming leaves on the "dead" and dried up stem that start flouring with life.

All in all, it seems as though the goji berry bush was made for this climate. And even more so the red currant bush (I will discuss this one next time).
