Kale...Chard...and Strawberries!

Today's agenda is to start more plants for our hydroponic systems. We already have some plant starts that include chard and strawberries but hope to start more kale plants. And all of these grow all year round!!!!!

We absolutely love green smoothies and buying greens at the store are either expensive or just not ideal.

Most of the greens in our local grocery stores come from California and, in our experience we noticed, that they more than likely picked early and have been at times infested with a common pest called aphids. We get aphids too on our hydroponic veggies but they are easy to manage since we are working on such a smaller scale. Thus, growing our own greens is the best.

In 2012, I had a dream of a financial collapse that would come to America. My whole life goal changed to becoming more self-sufficient. But dealing with health issues and realizing growing our own food was supreme this became more about being healthy along with self-sufficiency. Honestly, having just a small scale of greens, basil, and strawberries already has given us that sense of control in our lives that I believe was lost when modern grocery stores became common place in the 1900s. Before then we depended on our own gardens and livestock to feed a big family.

Reclaiming this control has been an amazing experience and it really wasn't too expensive to begin. Actually growing food in my own kitchen is both convenient and affordable. I wish more people would do this! 🥕

Have you thought about growing your own food? If not, don't forget there are local CSAs (community supported agriculture) nearly everywhere and usually provide fresh and local veggies with a small fee. Since we haven't grown any greens this year until now, we depended on our local CSA this past growing season and had everything from kale and potatoes to raw honey. 🥕🍆🍅

Blessings!
