Simplicity = Abundance

As you already know, I have a dream of implementing a permaculture system that is sustaining and provides for humans for years, decades, even centuries. And that would include a complete balance with nature...

In our current day, and more like over a hundred years...well into the middle of the 19th century, we have continued to disconnect from nature. As technology increased into every part of our daily lives, the less we needed natural and simple methods of survival. And thus it came...oppression.

When I tell people we are oppressed by technology everyone thinks I am crazy, like my tinfoil hat much reach the sky...as they walk away staring at their smart phone. I get it. A washing machine and dishwasher have made life much easier. I really did try to wash clothes with a manual device but wringing out clothes when it was -15 was not fun or safe. Although we were in an RV living off grid at that time so maybe I will revisit this idea soon. As for the dishwasher, I have to admit, I do use it when I have company.

Thus we can conclude technology is a blessing but it sure in the hell has been a curse.

Let me explain...

The more we depend on machines to perform it really does take us out of our natural element. When people worked in the 1800s, very few worked as anything else other than a farmer. Talk about permaculture, these small farmers would be genius in this field of expertise today. If you wanted to work off farm it wouldn't be located miles away and commuting for a job wasn't even a thought. A horse and buggy can only take you so far and it would take a day just to make it to your job that takes your car an hour (or more with traffic).

Now we have a population that depends on groceries from a central location for many and that store depends on a running supply chain. Then we need gas that we depend on others to take from the earth and refine it into gasoline. Or how about getting all water from one source for a city of millions?

And the rural life isn't much different except we drive farther for gas, food, and work.

I hope that puts think in perspective. And I really hope you understand that we are all a slave to a system that runs our lives. If it fails we die. Very few have the resources or the know-how to care for themselves, especially a family, if this whole system crumbles...and it will.

Therefore, what exactly can we do about it?

Learn how to work with nature instead of against it...

Another great quote from Bill Mollison is,

Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture there is no possibility of a stable social order.

Without working with nature again, we are going to cave as a society and we will all be forced to at some point. The question really is if we want to learn on our own accord or be forced to learn how to survive on a whim?

Our society is already destabilizing. Or rather it already has but the consequences are now in our faces...

Regardless, we have a nation depending on a system that is full of greed and ran by a few elites that don't have our best interest in mind. The television and social media is full of propaganda that defines the lives of millions to the point it thinks for them and they act how the good sheep should.

We are about to hit the greatest depression the world has ever seen...ever...and hardly anyone understands what that truly means.

This is why I am so passionate about permaculture. I am not dogmatic that it is the only way to true regeneration of nature and society, but it sure as hell answers many questions on how to do it.

Beginning our permaculture project has taught me how much I really am dependent on a supply chain for food, gas for chopping down trees in the forest, and electricity for almost everything else. And that saddest point to all of this is that our societal laws down to the lowest levels of government (see my last post on building codes) stand as a huge barrier to walk away from technological oppression.

When will our government and people stand up against reliance on the system and finally yearn for the freedom that is rightfully our?
